SUMMARY:Field Trip to Preston\, Larium and the Mountain Pride
DESCRIPTION:Preston has a well-documented history with plenty of ruins to show it… A few years ago\, the GTC participated in the stabilization efforts at this townsite\, restoring 2 of its standing buildings. This will be our first visit back now that the project is complete! Laurium\, our second stop\, has somewhat less to show when compared to Preston\, but what it has is truly wonderful. The site above Laurium\, however\, is what I would call the prize of the excursion.  Much remains at this remarkably well preserved townsite\, at the north end of a ruined mill with the name\, Mountain Pride. \nDescription of the day: We will start off by meeting at the west end of the City Market parking lot in Breckenridge. We will go through the run of the day and from there caravan up the hill to the site of Preston. This is a reasonably well graded dirt road and can be easily navigated in a car. However\, a higher ground clearance would be preferable. We will arrive at the site and look at the remaining ruins\, along with our freshly stabilized buildings. Josh will lead a talk focused on the architecture and archeology found at the site. The Ruins include 2 now stabilized and complete houses\, both now with roofs. There are multiple lumber piles and foundations including a ruined mill and mine called the Jumbo. We will lunch at the site. We will then caravan back through Breckenridge and up the Boreas pass road\, turning off onto a well-graded dirt road for less than a mile to the Ghost of Larium. We will park and walk the remaining 200’ into the site. We will look at the remaining buildings and a small\, ruined mill. Josh will talk on the Architecture found at the site. We will then disperse for an optional second half….a 1-mile hike to Mountain Pride. \nThis will be a pick your own ending trip\, meaning\, folks involved can pick what they want to do\, See Itinerary.  \nAccessibility: I would give this a hiking rating as a 3+\, according to the GTC field trip guide. The ground is a natural setting with debris\, and unmaintained roads and paths\, hilly inclines. Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs\, or people not in good physical health. Or difficulty walking. \nItems to Bring: packed lunch\, snacks\, PLENTY OF WATER\, hiking sticks\, sunscreen\, etc. Dress for a Hike\, it also may rain! \nWaiver: The Ghost Town Club of Colorado requires a signed waiver from everyone attending a Field Trip. Save time and effort on the day of the trip by downloading and filling out your waiver now and giving it to the Trip Leader on the day of the trip. GTC-Waiver-6-12-26.pdf \nPlease RSVP or Cancellation: Call trip leader \nIf you have any questions about the field trip or need to contact the leader day of the trip\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Josh Robinson (information below) \n Itinerary: \nMeet at 10:00AM \n Leave parking lot at 10:30AM\, Begin caravan up the Preston The road is reasonably well graded dirt and can be easily executed in a car. However\, higher clearance would be desirable. \nArrive at Preston 11:00 We will arrive in the center of the site and begin hiking around different buildings scattered at the intersection of Preston. Josh will lead a talk about the ruins found comparing 1940s and 1970s photography to what we see today. Along with looking at the newly stabilized buildings!! \nLunch at Preston 11:00 We will eat lunch at the Preston townsite\, bring your brown bag lunch! \nCaravan to Larium 1:30 We will head back down the way we came and pass through Breckenridge to head up Boreas Pass\, just before pavement ends\, we will turn off onto a well graded dirt road to Larium. We will park at the trail head parking area and hike roughly 200’ into the Larium townsite. The ruins we will see will be one restored log house that we can enter\, a partially collapsed boarding house\, and a small\, ruined mill. The setting is spectacular. Josh will lead a talk focusing on architecture and archeology found at the site. \nWe will disperse from Laurium townsite for optional second half 2:30 \nOption 1. Mountain Pride site and Mill with Josh 2:30 \nBegin 1 mile hike up to the townsite. The road is gated and must be hiked. The first part will be steep with the second half nearly flat. We will come into the site seeing a few ruins along the way. When we reach the site we will be greeted by roughly 10 standing buildings. Four of these are still roofed. Others exist scattered in the trees. Josh will lead the talk at the site examining the incredible Architecture and Archeology found at the site. \nRuins we will see: \nThis is an 1880s site\, that never went beyond the log cabin stage. I suspect based on the dumps at the site it was not occupied long. Today there are about 10 buildings vertical in some way. The town has a beautiful\, gridded street system with buildings sitting in neat rows. The site essentially has an upper and lower street running parallel. Not only are the streets well preserved\, but the buildings still march along them. The Primary Street dead ends directly into the side of the ruined Mountain Pride Mill. Scattered in the stream bed below are several ruined building foundations along with a very well-preserved story and a half Livery stable. This building is truly remarkable and an excellent example of the building type. The dumps throughout the site are great\, pointing to building uses which we will be able to identify. In the site there are 2 buildings that have been rehabbed at some point in the recent past…one behind the other… probably by Hippies. Both of those buildings are original and are counted in the 4 that still have roofs. Overall this may be one of the best-preserved early log cabin type townsite sites I have experienced. A truly Idyllic 1880s Ghost resting quietly on a hillside high above Breckenridge. \nHike back down head home 5:30? \n DINNER SOMEPLACE!!! \nOption 2. Go home. \n  \nClick to access GTC-Waiver-6-12-26.pdf

Nineteen one-lane bridges in Elbert Couty\, are quiet testaments to the county’s resilience and rural character\, and they owe their existence\, in large part\, to one of Colorado’s most devastating natural disasters. In mid-June 1965\, torrential rains over several days unleashed catastrophic flooding across the South Platte River basin. Although Denver-area flooding occurred on June 16\, another storm then next day devastated Elbert County when between five and twelve inches of rain fell in just a few hours. Four dams failed\, including Agate Dam on Bijou Creek\, and countless rural bridges were washed out. Roads turned to rivers\, ranches vanished under water\, and channels along East\, Middle\, and West Bijou Creeks were gouged deeper overnight. The floodwaters from East\, Middle and West Bijou Creeks combined into a surge that reached 466\,000 cubic feet per second by the time it was measured downstream near Wiggins. Long stretches of highways and county roads were destroyed\, leaving many residents isolated for days and\, in some places\, weeks. In the weeks and months that followed\, the county and state scrambled to restore transportation links many of the bridges we cross today were installed as “temporary” replacements\, quickly-poured concrete decks reinforced with rebar\, just wide enough for a pickup to pass. Six decades later\, they remain in service\, weathered and cracked but stubbornly functional\, though many are in concerning disrepair. Several still carry traffic today\, sixty years later\, a tangible reminder of how necessity and practicality shaped local infrastructure. (elbertcountymuseum.org)
